Discourse- and prominence-driven argument interpretation: the influence of discourse coherence and animacy on the neurophysiological correlates of grammatical function assignment in Swedish ...
Hörberg, Thomas. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: This study investigates the influence of prominence and discourse context on grammatical function (GF) assignment in Swedish transitive sentences, using event-related brain potentials (EPRs). Previous research has shown that the comprehension of written Swedish object-topicalized, OVS sentences with lexical and animate object NP arguments (e.g., "Bagarna visade ni till köket" - "The bakers you showed the the kitchen") involves a revision of the assignment of GFs to the NP arguments (i.e., grammatical function reanalysis). The sentence-initial NP "Bagarna" is initially interpreted as the subject of the sentence, an interpretation that needs to be revised once the post-verbal subject NP ("ni") is encountered. The present study investigates whether grammatical function reanalysis of such sentences also occurs during spoken language comprehension presented in discourse contexts, and whether this effect can be mitigated by discourse-pragmatic (i.e., a discourse context licensing the use of OVS by introducing a ...
