Abstract:
Der Roman Half of a Yellow Sun (Die Hälfte der Sonne) von Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie spielt in Nigeria, einem Land, dessen ethnische und sprachliche Diversität zu den größten weltweit zählt. In Anbetracht dieses komplexen multiethnischen und multilingualen Kontextes sowie der ethnisch motivierten Machtkämpfe des nigerianischen Bürgerkrieges (1967-70) untersucht die vorliegende Diplomarbeit wie in Half of a Yellow Sun der Status und die Funktion verschiedener Sprachen sowie die Beziehung zwischen Sprache und sozialer, kultureller und ethnischer Identität dargestellt wird. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es zu erforschen, welche Faktoren die Sprachwahl der Charaktere in verschiedenen Situationen bestimmen und welche Konsequenzen die Verwendung bestimmter Sprachen für die Sprechenden hat. Ausgehend von Bourdieus Konzept von Sprache als Kapitalform und Sprache als symbolische Macht wird dargelegt wie im Roman Sprache nicht nur dem Zweck der Kommunikation dient, sondern auch eine Form von symbolischem Kapital ist, dessen Einsatz einen bestimmten Vorteil verschaffen kann. ; The novel Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie is set in Nigeria, one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse countries in the world. Considering the complex multi-ethnic and multilingual context and the ethnically motivated power struggles during the Nigerian civil war (1967-70), this thesis examines how in Half of a Yellow Sun the status and function of different languages as well as the relationship between language and social, cultural or ethnic identity is represented. The aim of this thesis is to investigate which factors determine the language choices of characters in different situations and what consequences the use of specific languages has for the speakers. Based on Bourdieu’s notion of language as a form of capital and language as symbolic power, it is argued that in the novel language serves not only communicative purposes but is also a form of symbolic capital that can be used to obtain a certain benefit.
