Abstract:
O estudo assinala exemplos da presença de poesia e poemas em letras de música popular brasileira (MPB), consideradas isoladamente da música com a qual formam a arte híbrida da canção, ao longo de período de mais de duzentos anos. A pesquisa cobre letras de música popular brasileira desde seu início, marcado pelas apresentações, a partir da década de 1770, de Domingos Caldas Barbosa na Corte de Lisboa, até obras de letristas que estrearam na década de 1970. A base conceitual da pesquisa envolve, além da delimitação do significado de “letra de música popular”, a adoção de uma noção de poesia e de critério para a caracterização de poema. O estudo assenta-se na premissa de que, se inexistem definições consensuais de poesia e de poema, temas sempre sujeitos a inevitável margem de julgamento pessoal, existem, contudo, sinais indicadores do fenômeno poético como mensagem verbal. O principal parâmetro para a identificação da poesia, conforme proposto na dissertação, consiste na combinação de dois sinais: a linguagem figurada e conotativa em conjunto com uma sonoridade, em geral associada ao verso, que é distinta da ditada pela exposição linear do pensamento (ou, mais raramente, em conjunto com aspectos visuais que constituem parte integrante do texto). Entende-se o poema como a composição verbal que se caracteriza pela supremacia, no texto como um todo, da simultaneidade desses sinais; o poema é a obra em que se materializa prioritariamente, embora não unicamente, a poesia. O estudo dedica seus dois capítulos centrais à apresentação de múltiplos exemplos, constantes de obras de dezenas de letristas, em que se podem identificar instâncias de poesia e poemas mediante a união da linguagem figurada e conotativa com a sonoridade particular da mensagem verbal, isolada da música e advinda de fatores como os paralelismos, as rimas, as repetições e o ritmo. Um dos capítulos centrais exibe um panorama histórico de exemplos, desde a década de 1770, expostos basicamente por ordem cronológica de divulgação das obras dos letristas. O outro capítulo central reserva-se a exemplos em composições de letristas selecionados, entre os quais Laurindo Rabelo, Orestes Barbosa, Vinicius de Moraes, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Aldir Blanc e Paulo César Pinheiro. Aplicou-se critério extremamente rigoroso na indicação de exemplos de poemas em letras de música, para evitar, tanto quanto possível, questionamento sobre a inequívoca supremacia da sonoridade rítmica e linguagem figurada dos textos. Mesmo com critério restritivo e intuito exemplificativo, o estudo ressalta meia centena de poemas em letras de MPB. Os exemplos de instâncias de poesia presentes em segmentos de letras arrolados ao longo do trabalho são muito numerosos. Entre eles, recolhem-se, no final da tese, cem exemplos, organizados de forma a evidenciar também a riqueza de recursos poéticos utilizados pelos letristas (metáforas, símiles, metonímias, antíteses, etc.). A multiplicidade de exemplos fornecidos no estudo, que se fundam no exame dos textos em sua individualidade, poderá contribuir para o encaminhamento de antigo debate no Brasil sobre a conveniência de equiparação entre letra de música e poesia ou poema. ; The dissertation shows examples of the presence of poetry and poems in lyrics of Brazilian popular music (MPB) – taken in isolation from the music with which they form the hybrid art of the song – over a period of more than two hundred years. The research encompasses lyrics since MPB’s inception, with Domingos Caldas Barbosa’s performances in the Lisbon Court from 1770s on, until the works of lyricists who made their debut in the 1970s. The research’s conceptual basis includes, besides the delimitation of the meaning attributed to “lyrics of popular music”, the adoption of a notion of poetry and the criteria employed to characterize a verbal message as a poem. The thesis is predicated on the premise that, while there are no agreed upon definitions of poetry and poem, concepts always subject to personal judgment, there exist, however, indicative signs of the poetic phenomenon. The main parameter proposed for the identification of poetry consists in the association of two signs: the figurative and connotative language in conjunction with a kind of sonority, generally linked to the verse, that is different from the one imposed by the linear explanation of thoughts (or, less commonly, in conjunction with visual aspects being a component of the text). The poem is understood as the composition characterized by the supremacy, in the text as a whole, of the simultaneous combination of those signs; poetry materializes primarily, albeit not exclusively, in the poem. The two core chapters are devoted to showing multiple examples, from the works of dozens of lyricists, in which it is possible to identify instances of poetry and poems through the fusion of the figurative and connotative language with the special sonority of the verbal message, separated from the music and derived from elements like parallelisms, rhymes, repetitions and rhythm. One of the central chapters presents a historical survey of examples, since the 1770s, mainly in chronological order of publication of the songwriters’ works. The other is dedicated to examples found in the works of selected lyricists, including Laurindo Rabelo, Orestes Barbosa, Vinicius de Moraes, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Aldir Blanc and Paulo César Pinheiro. Very strict criteria were used in choosing examples of poems in lyrics, in order to avoid any doubts about the unequivocal supremacy of the rhythmic sonority together with the figurative language of the texts. Even with restrictive criteria and example-oriented research, the thesis points out fifty poems in MPB lyrics. The instances of poetry in segments of lyrics shown throughout the dissertation are plentiful. Among them, one hundred examples are assembled at the end of the dissertation, organized in such a way that the wealth of poetic resources be also evidenced (metaphor, simile, metonymy, antithesis, etc.). The multiplicity of examples provided in the dissertation, based on the examination of the texts in their individuality, may contribute to the longstanding discussion in Brazil over the convenience of equalizing lyrics with poetry or poem.
