O acesso lexical em falantes trilíngues português-inglês-italiano ; Lexical access in portuguese-english-italian trilingual speakers
; Studies regarding bi/multilingual lexical access use lexical decision tasks to compare the processing of cognates and noncognate words and investigate if there is co-activation of two or more languages even in a single language task. As in these studies, our goal is to understand how lexical processing works in Portuguese-English-Italian trilinguals, using a lexical decision task in Italian. The aim of this work is thus to verify the influence of one language over another while reading single words. We tested the hypothesis of language non-selectivity, in which we expected to find a cognate facilitation effect. To do so, 36 students of Italian from UFRGS (16 men and 20 women), both from undergraduate and extension (NELE) courses, participated in this study. Participants filled out a questionnaire regarding their linguistic history; performed a lexical decision task, in which they should identify whether words presented to them were Italian words; and answered a single translation task. Results showed that there is language co-activation and that multilingual lexical access is non-selective. However, we found a cognate facilitation effect only when the native language, in this case Portuguese, was not present in the cognate condition.
