Abstract:
The current study aims to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying the foreign language effect, that is, how moral violations and semantic violations are processed by native and non-native speakers. Existing studies on foreign language effects have reported mixed findings. While some studies showed stronger responses when bilinguals respond to moral dilemmas in their native compared to foreign languages. (Costa, Foucart, Hayakawa, Aparici, Apesteguia, Heafner & Keysar, 2014; Cipolletti, McFarlane & Weissglass, 2016), others failed to show any effects (Ĉavar & Tytus, 2018). In particular, most of the existing studies were conducted in Europe-languages under the western cultural context. It thus remains to be sure whether the same results will be observed in a different language/cultural context.
