New speakers, potential new speakers, and their experiences and abilities in Scottish Gaelic
Abstract:
At present, adult L2 users account for approximately four per cent of the total of individuals with some knowledge of Gaelic. Previous research has investigated the role of adult L2 Gaelic users in language revitalisation (A. MacCaluim, 2007), their language learning experiences (E. McEwan-Fujita, 2010), and their identities (W. McLeod and B. O’Rourke, 2015). Research by N. Carty (2015) has examined their language processing and oral production skills. This chapter attempts to broaden the scope of N. Carty (2015) to better incorporate the new speaker model, with a view to enhancing our understanding of the ways in which Gaelic L2 users’ speech is perceived.
