An examination of the supernatural in Scottish Gaelic folksongs and folktales
Wallace, Catherine Jane. - : The University of Sydney, 1994. : Department of English, 1994
Abstract: In this thesis I will be examining the Scottish Gaelic folktales and folksongs which deal with the supernatural. I have chosen this particular genre because of its complexities have meant that historically it has been treated in a haphazard and, at times, arrogant fashion. I hope to be able to show the ways in which this genre has, in the past, been dissected and altered to suit the special interests of various folklore enthusiasts. I also hope to clarify why this genre has lent itself to this type of treatment. As far as possible though the aid of tapes and written example I shall attempt to give an idea of the original shape of the material and a graphic illustration of the alterations which it has undergone. As an extension of this historical perspective of the treatment of this type of folklore, the idea will also be put forward that Scottish folklore and song, although oral not written, is the literature of the country and deserves to be treated with respect, and not altered in its essence or reduced to its bones in order that it might be fitted into a system of classification. I shall be examining examples of this genre in detail to show that it is worthy of serious study of a different type from that that is usually accorded it.
