Please click on the alternative location to access it. ; 101 p. ; This project examined how the events of February 14, 2008 affected the risk perception and enrollment decisions of students attending Northern Illinois University in the subsequent fall and spring semesters. Thirty-four students at Northern Illinois University who were not present during the semester in which the February 14, 2008 shootings took place were interviewed and the resulting transcriptions were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The analysis resulted in six core categories that addressed four research questions posed by the review of literature. The results support the literature in how participants went about making a decision about which university to attend and their consultation of the media following a crisis event. However, the results conflict with the literature in how important safety was to the population in the college decision-making process, even in light of February 14, 2008. Implications for higher education institutions and further areas of research are provided.
