Du choc à la confusion : la rencontre interculturelle dans les stages Québec Sans Frontières au Sénégal
Abstract: Depuis quelques années, les critiques du volontourisme se multiplient. Or, les frontières autour de ce concept sont floues. Au Québec, le programme Québec Sans Frontières (QSF), créée en 1995, offre des stages d’initiation à la coopération internationale pour les jeunes québécois-e-s de 18 à 35 ans. Se défendant d’être une forme de volontourisme, le programme met plutôt de l’avant ses missions de solidarité et de rapprochement Nord-Sud. Sur la question de la rencontre interculturelle dans le volontourisme et le bénévolat international, la littérature est partagée entre des postures enthousiastes et des postures critiques. Alors que l’objet d’étude y est presque toujours le résultat de la rencontre, ce mémoire s’intéressera plutôt aux différents processus qui s’y jouent. En retournant l’objet ainsi, il est alors possible de concevoir la rencontre comme étant dynamique et interactionnelle. Se détachant de l’appareillage théorique et des analyses empruntés aux études touristiques, ce mémoire s’est plutôt inspiré de la littérature sur la mobilité étudiante, en s’intéressant aux processus d’adaptation et d’apprentissage. Pour appréhender la nature interactionnelle de la rencontre, cette recherche mobilise un cadre théorique inspiré de la philosophie herméneutique de Gadamer, des approches systémiques des relations humaines, de l’ethnographie de la communication et de la sociolinguistique interactionnelle. Ce projet de recherche prend ainsi la forme d’une ethnographie de la rencontre interculturelle dans les stages Québec Sans Frontières au Sénégal qui tente de répondre à la question suivante : Comment sont produits les savoirs culturels et interculturels, à travers la rencontre, et comment s’articulent-ils avec les processus d’adaptation et d’intégration des stagiaires ? Cette recherche est le fruit d’un terrain ethnographique de 4 mois, au Québec et au Sénégal, suivant le parcours de deux cohortes de stagiaires, dans deux organismes de coopération internationale différents, effectuant un stage QSF au Sénégal, à l’été 2017. ; In recent years, voluntourism has become the object of increasing criticism, but the boundaries around this concept are unclear. In Quebec, the Quebec Without Borders (QWB) program, created in 1995, offers “initiation to international cooperation” internships for young Quebecers aged 18 to 35. Defending itself from being associated with voluntourism, the program places emphasis on its primary missions of solidarity and rapprochement. On the question of intercultural encounters, the literature on international volunteering is divided between enthusiastic postures and critical postures. While the object of study is almost always the result of the encounter, this research focuses on its process, which makes it possible to understand the dynamic nature of interactions in intercultural encounters. Standing out from the theoretical apparatus and analyses borrowed from tourism studies, this research was inspired by the literature on student mobility, focusing on adaptation and learning processes. To be able to grasp the interactional nature of the intercultural encounter, this research mobilizes an intercultural theoretical framework inspired by Gadamer's hermeneutic philosophy, systemic approaches to human relations, ethnographies of communication and interactive sociolinguistics. This research project thus takes the form of an ethnography of the intercultural encounter in the Quebec Without Borders internships in Senegal, in which I intend to answer the following question: How are the cultural and intercultural knowledge produced, through the encounter, and how do they relate to the processes of adaptation and integration of the participants? This research is the result of an ethnographic fieldwork of 4 months, in Quebec and Senegal, following the course of two cohorts of participants, in two different international cooperation organizations, doing a QWB internship in Senegal, in the summer of 2017.
