Abstract:
This project aims to study two questions: One, more general question, is whether scenes in which negators are uttered to children contain perceptual and/or linguistic cues which they can use to map these words in their language (e.g., "not" and "no") to their meanings. The second, more specific question, is whether different kinds of negative communicative functions (e.g., nonexistence, denial, as described in Bloom 1968, Choi 1988) vary in the quality and quantity of cues present in the visual and linguistic environments, and whether, if so, this may explain why some functions are attested earlier in child productions. This is tested by showing adult speakers real clips of parents interacting with their children. These videos are muted other than a beep over one critical utterance, which the participants are tasked with guessing. Depending on their condition, they may see the video only, receive the linguistic cues present in the message only, or receive both. This is an update and edit to a prior ...
