Carmen et Standard Error: Computational Methods in Stylometry for Classical Latin Poetry
Abstract:
This thesis presents three pieces of original research on the application of techniques from the field of Computational Stylometry to the analysis of classical Latin poetry. Stylometry examines the tiny differences in technique that separate one author from another. Much as a small slip of brushwork might distinguish a forgery from a Vermeer, authors leave stylistic ‘fingerprints’ on every work they produce. In some cases, computational analysis can detect these fingerprints where a human cannot. Two of these papers introduce new methods; one examines the stylistic fingerprint present in the authors’ use of metre, and one examines the use of rhyme. Although there is a fair body of existing literature that considers these factors, they are almost entirely unexplored using computational approaches. The final paper addresses an open authorship question. It examines the style of Silius Italicus’ Punica 8.144–223 (the so-called Aldine Additamentum) using an interdisciplinary approach. The history, transmission and literary arguments are carefully considered in ‘traditional’ philological style, and then three computational stylometric studies are performed, including the novel method of metrical analysis that was presented in the first paper. The authorship paper argues that there is very strong evidence to reject the proposition that the section was written by Silius, and instead supports the growing number of scholars who believe it to be the work of a Humanist interpolator. ; Thesis (MPhil) -- University of Adelaide, School of Humanities, 2021
