Abstract:
This article criticizes the modern classification of complements associated to the verb in traditional grammar. The foundations of this classification are a shifting position test and a specific sentence structure. We show that the test does not characterize a clear class of complements and we question the relevance of the structure, in particular thanks to an obvious counter-example. Finally, we promote an alternative, simpler, structure, dependency based and made possible by taking into account meaning in the construction process.
