L’Université de Moncton, la langue et les normes. Enjeux acadiens, échos finlandais

Abstract:
Cet article évoque la création, puis la suppression, d’un cours à contenu sociolinguistique au sein de la formation de français de l’Université de Moncton, en Acadie du Nouveau-Brunswick, au Canada. Le cours est motivé par le constat que la situation minoritaire de la population acadienne n’est pas théorisée et que l’enseignement d’une variété de français dite « standard », alignée sur des pratiques linguistiques exogènes, génère une vive insécurité linguistique parmi les étudiants. La création de ce cours est analysée comme un évènement discursif autour duquel ont gravité une série de discours; ils révèlent une tension idéologique majeure entre les soutiens d’une approche sociolinguistique dans l’enseignement de la langue et les soutiens d’une approche traditionnelle. Les données comprennent les rapports administratifs relatifs à la formation en français produits entre 1994 et 2007, les sommaires du cours sociolinguistique et des entrevues semi-directives menées auprès des professeurs en 2014.Dans une discussion, un chercheur finlandais est sollicité pour réfléchir aux analyses proposées dans l’article dans le cadre de la minorité suédophone de Finlande. ; This article discusses the creation and suppression of a sociolinguistic course in the French language training at the Université de Moncton in Acadia, New Brunswick, Canada. The course was motivated by the observation that the minority situation of the Acadian population has not been theorized in class, and that the teaching of a variety of the so-called “Standard French,” modeled on exogenous language practices, has been a powerful generator of linguistic insecurity among the students. The creation of this course is analyzed as a discursive event around which a series of discourses gravitated, revealing a major ideological struggle between the tenants of a sociolinguistic approach in the teaching of the language and those in support of a traditional approach. The data include administrative reports related to French language training published between 1994 and 2007, summaries of the sociolinguistic course, and semi-directive interviews done with professors in 2014.In a discussion, a Finnish researcher is asked to reflect on the analyses proposed in the article in the context of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland.
