Emic conceptions present a completely different picture: the deaf define themselves as being good at seeing. The "deaf gaze" is a collective instrument constructed through contact with other deaf persons þ an instrument of which the highest form is the languages of signs and gestures produced by the body and received through sight. Looking is not just a means of receiving but also a fine-tuned way of emitting information. It is involved in the "grammaticalization" of space and in the vocabulary. The rift separating the deaf as they really are from the ideas people have of them leads us to interpret the latter as a form of audiocentrism, the last traces of a learned ethnocentrism. ; Des sourds il n'est ordinairement retenu que leur déficience auditive. Les conceptions indigènes sont tout autres : les sourds s'auto-définissent comme des visuels. Le regard sourd est un outil collectif qui se construit au contact d'autres sourds. Les langues gestuelles, produites par le corps et reçues par les yeux, en sont la manifestation la plus achevée. Le regard n'est pas utilisé seulement comme récepteur, mais également comme émetteur d'informations d'une extrême finesse. Il intervient dans la grammaticalisation de l'espace, et son importance culturelle se reflète dans le lexique. L'abîme qui sépare ce que sont les sourds des représentations que l'on s'en fait conduit à interpréter ces dernières comme la manifestation d'un audiocentrisme, dernier vestige de l'ethnocentrisme savant.
