Abstract:
Language and speech alterations have been described in people with Bipolar Disorder (BD), particularly in semantic contents, speed of language, and verbal association. A commonly used method to study lexical retrieval is the Verbal Fluency (VF) task (Lezak, M. D., Howieson, D. B., Loring, D. W., & Fischer, J. S. Neuropsychological assessment. New York: Oxford University Press, USA, 2004.). In its standard form, the participant's performance is rated by the number of correct words (excluding errors and repetitions) produced in one minute for a given cue (either semantic or phonemic). Two previous meta-analysis have synthesized the evidence in the literature showing a possible impairment in VF in BD. However, the high heterogeneity among studies and their inability to demonstrate an effect of the subtype of BD, the type VF task (semantic or phonemic), and the polarity of all mood states on the main outcomes, leaves the topic open for further exploration.
