Abstract: How fixed expressions are syntactically stored in our mental lexicon has been the subject of debate in many influential studies. These studies can explain many but not all phenomena relating to idiom representation yet. One phenomena difficult to explain is the syntactic flexibility of idioms, meaning that language users can use their syntactic creativity when producing idioms without miscommunication or the idiom losing its figurative meaning (Kyriacou et al., 2019). For example, speakers can add the adjective ‘proverbial’ to modify idioms while these still retain their figurative meaning (e.g. ‘to kick the proverbial bucket’; ‘to spill the proverbial beans’) (Ifill, 2002). Some hypotheses have focused on explaining the possible syntactic transformations idioms can undergo, for example Everaert’s (2010) and Newmeyer’s (1974) hypotheses. Their hypotheses make different predictions regarding the syntactic flexibility of idioms, both basing possible transformations on different elements: Newmeyer’s (1974) ...
