EMI and the Teaching of Cultural Studies in Higher Education: A Study Case

Abstract:
This paper examines students’ perspectives on the challenges raised by their first encounter with EMI pedagogy in higher education. The research was conducted with a group of beginner students with no previous experience in monolingual instruction in English. The case studied is based on two English Cultural Studies subject courses of the English Studies Program at a Spanish university and taught in a learning environment of total linguistic immersion. By activating their metacognitive and metalinguistic awareness, students were encouraged to take ownership of the stages of their learning process and assess it critically. Set at the intersection of EFL, ESP, and EAP, the specificities of these courses comprising linguistic and non-linguistic contents shed light on the teaching procedures employed in English Departments training programs, whose goals are to turn undergraduates into expert linguists and philologists and maximise their communicative proficiency in academic English. ; Este artículo analiza las perspectivas de los estudiantes sobre los retos que plantea su primer contacto con la metodología pedagógica del inglés como medio de instrucción en la enseñanza superior. La investigación se realizó con un grupo de estudiantes sin experiencia previa en la enseñanza monolingüe del inglés. El caso estudiado se basa en dos asignaturas de Estudios Culturales Ingleses del Programa de Estudios Ingleses de una universidad española y se imparte en un entorno de aprendizaje de inmersión lingüística absoluta. Activando su conciencia metacognitiva y metalingüística, se animó a los estudiantes a responsabilizarse de su proceso de aprendizaje y a evaluarlo críticamente. Situadas en la intersección del inglés como lengua extranjera (EFL), inglés con fines específicos (ESP) e inglés con fines académicos (EAP), las especificidades de estos cursos que comprenden contenidos lingüísticos y no lingüísticos arrojan luz sobre los procedimientos de enseñanza empleados en los programas de formación de los departamentos de inglés, cuyos objetivos son convertir a los estudiantes universitarios en lingüistas y filólogos expertos y maximizar su competencia comunicativa en inglés académico. ; Este article analitza les perspectives dels estudiants sobre els reptes que planteja el primer contacte amb la metodologia pedagògica que utilitza l’anglès com a mitjà d’instrucció en l’ensenyament superior. La investigació es va realitzar amb un grup d’estudiants que no han tingut experiència previa amb l’ensenyament monolingüe en anglès. El cas que s’estudia es basa en dos assignatures d’Estudis Culturals Anglesos del Programa d’Estudis Anglesos d’una universitat espanyola i s’impartix en un entorn d’immersió lingüística total. Es va animar els estudiants a prendre responsabilitat del seu procés d’aprenentatge activant la seua consciència metacognitiva i metalingüística, així com a avaluar-lo críticament. En un punt intermedi entre l’anglés com a llengua estrangera (EFL), l’anglés per a fins específics (ESP) i l’anglés amb fins acadèmics (EAP), les especificitats d’estos cursos que inclouen contingut lingüístic i no lingüístic aclareixen els procediments pedagògics utilitzats pels cursos de formació dels departaments d’Estudis Anglesos, objectius dels quals és convertir els estudiants de grau en lingüistes i filòlegs experts i maximitzar la seua competència comunicativa en l’anglés acadèmic.
