Abstract:
Relief prints--woodcuts; Illustrated with hand colored woodcuts. Linen-backed leaves include 18 leaves of text and 18 leaves of colored engravings on facing pages with multiple engravings per leaf bound in publisher's ornamental brown cloth binding. Contains stories in prose and verse to amuse children and remind them to maintain high morals and good behavior. Most of the words are monosyllabic and all multisyllabic words have been broken down into their component syllables. This illustration depicts Tom who chose to play by the water instead of going to school as he was told, and as a consequence had to be rescued from the water by his brother and dog. The text reminds children that "it is always best to be obedient, for self-willed and obstinate children are sure to suffer their folly." ; Peter Palette is a pseudonym for Thomas Onwhyn. Some engravings bear Dean & Co.'s Threadneedle street address, the publisher's location from 1811-1847. Most engravings, however, bear Dean & Son's Ludgate Hill address, the publisher's location from 1856-1870. ; Moral instruction; Manners and social etiquette;
