Nonverbal clause order in a verb-initial language

Abstract:
Most languages show a harmonic relationship between order in different constructions, including between verbal clauses and nonverbal clauses (if there is such a distinction). I show that this is not always the case, though surface appearance can be deceiving, suggesting simple harmony. Reference to pragmatic interpretations and restrictions for different structural and functional positions reveals that disharmonic patterns are found between verbal and nonverbal clauses in Tukang Besi, a Western Malayo-Polynesian language from central Indonesia. In Tukang Besi verbal clauses are head-initial, as seen in (1). With nonverbal clauses two orders are found, shown in (2) and (3), one predicate-initial and one predicate-final. (Predicate status can easily be determined by the ability to cooccur with separate aspect marking.) The immediate question is, of course, which of (2) and (3) is ‘basic’, and which is derived. This question is fuelled by the existence of clauses such as (4), a variant on the basic clause seen in (1), and pragmatically marked. Comparing the case marking in (1)- (4) it would seem that (1) aligns with (3) and (2) with (4), on the basis of the case marking. (1) VPPREDICATE na NP (2) Te NP NPPREDICATE
