Abstract:
; The present study investigates upper secondary students’ Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE), Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA) and Willingness to Communicate (WTC) in light of the shift to Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Participants were 420 pupils who attend an Austrian higher technical college. In order to measure FLE, ratings of nine Likert scale items (Botes, Dewaele & Greiff 2020) were analysed. FLCA was measured via eight items that were extracted from the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope 1986; see also Dewaele & MacIntyre 2014, 2016). The items representing FLE and FLCA were included twice, once in the context of pre-Covid-19 classes and once in the context of ERT in spring 2020. The measure of WTC was based on six items (Dewaele 2019). In order to give participants a voice, open-ended questions allowed them to share experiences they made during regular face-to-face and ERT lessons. Statistical analyses revealed that participants experienced significantly higher levels of FLE than FLCA in both regular ‘in-person’ and remotely taught lessons. However, the results also showed that students tended to feel less enjoyment and anxiety altogether once lessons were no longer taught on site. The FLE subscale that remained the most stable was teacher appreciation, whereas personal and social enjoyment declined during the distance learning phase. As regards foreign language learners’ WTC, a significant link to their emotions was found, irrespective of the instructional context. Other variables, i.e. students’ grades and self-perceived proficiency, were also linked to their WTC, FLCA in both settings and FLE in ‘in-person’ lessons. The findings suggest that ‘in-person’ EFL classes evoke greater emotional responses in learners. Amongst other variables, teachers play a decisive role in boosting their students’ FLE and thereby in creating a pleasant classroom atmosphere, be it online or on-site.
