Konkret handelt es sich um den Arbeitsplatz Flughafen und betrifft die Kommunikation zwischen Passagieren und dem Bodenabfertigungspersonal am Check-in-Schalter. Flughäfen bedienen sich einer eigenen Fachsprache sowie der Lingua franca Englisch, aber aufgrund der sprachlichen und kulturellen Vielfalt der Passagiere können mitunter Verständigungsschwierigkeiten auftreten. Ziel dieser Forschung ist es, auf die kulturspezifischen Herausforderungen aufzuzeigen und zu erforschen, ob und inwiefern die Kommunikation zwischen Flugreisenden und dem Check-in-Personal verläuft, wenn kein gemeinsamer sprachlicher Nenner gegeben ist. Zunächst wird die Arbeit am Check-in-Schalter mit all ihren Prozessen und Verantwortungen vorgestellt, um zu veranschaulichen, warum eine effiziente Kundenkommunikation in erster Linie notwendig ist. Anschließend werden verschiedene Kommunikationsarten erläutert sowie der Kulturbegriff, gemeinsam mit unterschiedlichen Kulturmodellen. Ferner wird auf herausfordernde Situationen aufgewiesen, welche im konkreten Setting eintreten. Die anschließende empirische Untersuchung beinhaltet Erfahrungen, Meinungen und kommunikative Strategien des Bodenabfertigungspersonals des Wiener Flughafens. Aufgrund der realen sowie praxisbezogenen Einblicke werden Schlussfolgerungen und Lösungswege präsentiert. ; The present master’s thesis deals with communication challenges and possible solutions, which occur in a culturally diverse environment. Specifically, at the workplace airport relating to the communication between passengers and the ground staff at the check-in counter. Airports are making use of a particular technical language as well as of English as a lingua franca, but due to the passenger’s linguistic and cultural diversity, comprehension problems may arise. The goal of this research is to point out the cultural challenges and to research, if and how the communication between passengers and the check-in staff takes place, without a common language. Initially the check-in procedures and responsibilities will be introduced, to illustrate why an efficient customer communication is necessary in the first place. Subsequently different types of communication and the concept of culture along with various cultural models will be described. Furthermore, challenging situations, which occur in this specific setting will be demonstrated. The following empirical study includes experiences, opinions and communication strategies of the ground staff of the Vienna airport. Due to the realistic and practically orientated insights, conclusions and approaches will be presented.
