She's gotta have it: Representativeness of Afro-American series as ESL intake in high school
105-121 (2022)
Abstract: Through the analysis of a corpus of 40 testimonies of adolescents in the 2nd year of Bachillerato about their consumption habits of series on platforms such as Netflix, in this paper we proceed to analyse the greater or lesser preference for different contents that refer to references beyond the mainstream. With the aim of getting closer to the network of beliefs that these students hold about television input as an acquisitive vector of English as an L2, a questionnaire was drawn up which, starting from their general consumption habits, leads to the English-speaking sphere and ends up focusing on the reception of the series Nola Darling by the Afroamerican director Spike Lee. The ultimate aim would be not to overlook these beliefs and representations, with a view to incorporating them into more inclusive and less segregated ESL curricula. The first results point to a preference for American vs European series, an idiomatic consumption of OV and a prevalence of WASP referents and contexts as an anchor with their generational community. In relation to the proposed pilot series, Nola Darling, traditional beliefs stand out, such as the association of marginality and precariousness with the Afroamerican female collective.
