Abstract: Métalangages et activités métalinguistiques sont considérés sous trois aspects : (1) l'importance variable que leur accordent différents courants méthodologiques dans l'histoire récente de la didactique des langues ; (2) la place qu'ils occupent effectivement dans les discours de la classe ; (3) le rôle qu'ils se voient ou non attribuer dans le processus d'acquisition de la langue étrangère. On s'efforce de montrer, pour chacun de ces angles d'examen, comment une prise en compte de la diversité des modes et des niveaux de présence du métalinguistique déplace en partie les lectures habituelles des phénomènes considérés. ; Metalanguages and metalinguistic activities are examined from three standpoints : (1) the variable importance given to them by different approaches and methodological trends in the recent history of language teaching ; (2) the place they actually hold in the discourse of the language classroom ; (3) the role that they are considered to play (or not to play) in the process of foreign language acquisition. The paper is an attempt to show how, from each of these standpoints, the reading of the phenomena under consideration is somewhat modified, when one takes into account the many ways and modes in which metalinguistic dimensions manifest themselves and can be observed. ; Coste Daniel.
