Abstract:
Este estudio tiene como objetivo analizar las características semántico modales de los piropos en hablantes cubanos desde un enfoque cognitivo-funcional, y de esta manera, determinar las categorías modales que no se corresponden con la semántica literal de los enunciados. Dicho de otro modo, el análisis permitiría demostrar la naturaleza intrínseca del piropo como herramienta comunicativa de violencia verbal y expresión de desigualdad de género, cuya dualidad funcional se desprende de la relación entre las funciones comunicativas, la semántica literal o simbólica, y variables sociolingüísticas y antropológicas. Para la realización de la investigación, se ha elaborado un corpus de 80 piropos, basado en cuestionarios anónimos a hablantes cubanos. Los datos han sido categorizados según el aparato formal de la modalidad semántica (Caballero, 2014). Además, se ha llevado a cabo debates grupales para observar las actitudes de los participantes en situaciones comunicativas donde el piropo emerge como unidad discursiva. Los resultados demuestran que los piropos no siguen un tipo de categoría específica, aunque la de valoración es la más frecuente. El uso de metáforas e hipérboles demuestran la insinceridad del emisor, quien presupone igualmente ingenuidad por parte de la destinataria. El piropo ha sido asimilado, al menos en el marco cultural cubano, como una fórmula de aparente cortesía verbal, y que provoca que los informantes masculinos de la investigación no vean rasgos amenazantes en su uso. ; This study is aimed at examining semantic-modal characteristics of catcalls among Cuban speakers, from a cognitive-functional approach, and hence establishes what modal categories do not match the semantics of utterances. Stated differently, the analysis allows for a better understanding of catcalls as a communicative tool towards verbal violence and gender inequality. This binary function stems from the correlation among communicative goals, literal or symbolic semantics, and sociolinguistic and anthropological variables. To carry out the research study, a corpus of 80 compliments has been elaborated, based on anonymous questionnaires completed by Cuban speakers. The resulting data has been itemized according to the conceptual framework of semantic modality (Caballero 2014). Also, various group debate sessions have been held to observe participants’ attitudes in specific communicative situations in which catcalls constitute a speech unit. Findings suggest that catcalls do not possess a specific category, but that of valuation stands out as the most frequent one. The use of metaphors and hyperboles shows that male users, who presuppose female hearers as naïve participants, are generally characterized by insincerity. Catcalls have been assimilated, at least within the Cuban cultural framework, as an apparent strategy of politeness, thus causing male participants not to recognize the threatening traits of such compliments.
