Abstract:
"Im Kontext von Globalisierungsprozessen werden Fertigkeiten wie Fremdsprachenkenntnisse und interkulturelle Kompetenzen, die hier zusammenfassend als transnationales Bildungskapital bezeichnet werden, immer wichtiger. Es gibt verschiedene Wege, transnationales Bildungskapital zu erwerben. Ein Auslandsaufenthalt noch während der Schulzeit ist eine wohl sehr effektive Variante. Die Analyse des klassenspezifischen Zugangs zu transnationalem Kapital ist dabei weitgehend unerforscht. Im Rückgriff auf die bildungssoziologische Literatur und vor allem auf die Arbeiten von Pierre Bourdieu entwickeln wir ein Set von Hypothesen und prüfen diese mit Hilfe einer Sekundäranalyse der Daten des Sozio‐oekonomischen Panels (SOEP). Die bivariaten Befunde zeigen zunächst, dass die Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Auslandsaufenthaltes von a) der Kapitalausstattung und dem Bildungsinvestitionsverhalten des Elternhauses, b) vom kulturellen Kapital und dem Engagement des Kindes, c) der Gelegenheitsstruktur in Form des Schultypus einerseits und von vermittelten Institutionen andererseits sowie schließlich d) von familiären Konflikten bestimmt wird. Die multivariaten Analysen zeigen, dass dem Besuch des Gymnasiums eine entscheidende Filterfunktion zukommt. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit, durch einen schulischen Auslandsaufenthalt transnationales Kapital zu erwerben, wird darüber hinaus in bedeutendem Umfang von der materiellen Ausstattung des Elternhauses bestimmt." (Autorenreferat) ; "Due to globalization processes foreign language proficiency and intercultural skills - competencies which are defined as transnational educational capital - have become increasingly important. Although there are different ways of acquiring transnational educational capital, studying abroad at an early age is probably one of the most efficient ways. Until now the analysis of class specific access to transnational capital is largely unexplored. Going back to the literature on social class and education and particularly to the work of Pierre Bourdieu, we develop a set of hypotheses and test them using data from the Socio‐Economic Panel Study (SOEP). Bivariate results show that the probability of studying abroad is influenced by a) the material, social and cultural capital of the child’s parents and their investment in education, b) the cultural capital of the child and his or her engagement, c) the opportunity structure in the form of school type and institutions who organize school exchanges and d) finally by conflicts between parents and the child. Multivariate analyzes show that being enrolled at a Gymnasium plays an important filtering role. In addition, the probability of acquiring transnational educational capital is determined to a considerable extent by the parents’ material capital." (author's abstract)
