Phonetic Entrainment ...

Abstract:
The methodology described here preregisters the acoustic-phonetic predictors we will use to assess the degree of adaptation or entrainment between conversational partners in the experiment. Data has already been collected and originally analysed using a variety of phonetic measures run on the entire wav file without segmentation. A new researcher who is not familiar with the data is re-analysing the speech data using a registered set of acoustic-phonetic predictors on the phone-aligned data. The overarching goal is to determine whether speakers align their phonetic representations to be more similar to that of their interlocutor. The phonetic representation will first be assessed holistically using a wide variety of acoustic-phonetic measures at the segmental and suprasegmental levels to determine alignment. Following this, we will investigate which of those acoustic-phonetic measures carried the most weight in determining the degree of alignment. ...
