Abstract:
International audience ; This article focuses on long distance anaphora from an interactional, multimodal, conversation-analytic approach. The study deals with a naturally occurring situation that makes the epistemic and normative issues raised by anaphora particularly observable. It seeks to consider them as practical problems relevantly identified and solved in situ by the participants themselves, within their ongoing activity. Based on video-recordings of encounters between waiters and customers in an upmarket restaurant, the paper shows how memory issues generated by long distance anaphors are made manifest and even formulated by the participants, and offers a systematic analysis of the multimodal turn formats that exhibit them.
