Abstract: In this experiment we aim to test whether there is a link between implicit associations and the effects of social primes on the perception of American-accented English. We predict that individual listeners’ implicit associations (as measured by an Implicit Association Test; IAT) will be related to the size of their “social priming costs”. That is, for a given listener, the size of the difference in performance between conditions (i.e., following a White versus an East Asian prime) will vary, and we expect that listeners with larger priming effects will have stronger implicit associations between these races/ethnicities and the constructs American vs. Foreign. We also plan to examine implicit associations with the constructs Good vs. Bad, and hypothesize that the two measures of implicit bias may interact with social priming effects differently. The study will include two experiments that examine this effect for two pairs of races/ethnicities: similar to prior work, we will examine priming for a White versus ...
