Curso académico 2017-2018 ; [ES]Este trabajo analiza el debate académico que en 2011 enfrentó al veterano romanista Alberto Vàrvaro con los coordinadores del Dictionnaire Étymologique Roman (DÉRom), Éva Buchi y Wolfgang Schweickard. En proceso de elaboración desde 2008, en formato digital, el DÉRom es el primer proyecto de diccionario con perspectiva panrománica desde el REW de Meyer-Lübke. Su principal innovación estriba en que no se parte de étimos latinos para el estudio de la etimología, sino del protorromance, un supuesto ancestro común a todas las lenguas románicas, reconstruido mediante cognados romances con el método de la gramática comparada-reconstrucción. En el diccionario, los lemas se presentan en notación fonético-fonológica y se toma en consideración la totalidad de las lenguas de la Romania, se hallen o no estandarizadas. Vàrvaro cuestiona los beneficios de aplicar a la etimología románica un método ideado para aquellos casos en que no existe una lengua madre atestiguada, y reniega de la emancipación del latín que esta metodología implica. La polémica se desarrolló a lo largo de cuatro artículos publicados en la Revue de Linguistique Romane y en comunicaciones públicas posteriores. No llegó a producirse consenso entre ambas partes, con lo que la discusión puede considerarse sintomática de una brecha generacional, o de la confrontación de un paradigma latinizante y otro reconstruccionista en el seno de la filología románica. En nuestro trabajo, comenzamos por resumir los principios fundamentales del DÉRom; a continuación, analizamos los artículos de la polémica y señalamos las principales aportaciones del diccionario en los diferentes ámbitos de la Romania (iberorromania, galorromania, italorromania y dacorromania); comentamos las relaciones entre protorromance, latín y latín vulgar; para finalmente extraer una serie de conclusiones. [EN]This paper is an analyses of the academic debate that, in 2011, brought the senior romanist Alberto Várvaro face to face with the cordinators of the Dictionnaire Étymologique Roman (DÉRom) Eva Buchi and Wolfgang Schweickard. The DÉRom, a work in progress since 2008, is released in digital format, and is the first dictionary project to take a panromance approach since Meyer-Lübke’s REW. The main innovation of the DÉRom lies in choosing Proto-Romance, a supposed common ancester to all Romance languages, rather than Latin etyma as a starting point for the study of etymology. Proto-Romance is studied by means of Roman cognates, through the methodology of comparative reconstruction. In the DÉRom the entry words are presented in phonetic-phonological notation. All Romance languages, whether standardized or not, are taken into account. Várvaro questions the benefits of applying to Romance Philology a methodology conceived for those languages whose origin is unknown or unattested, and does not accept the emancipation of Latin that such methodology implies. The resulting controversy developed itself in the course of four papers published in the Revue de Linguistique Romane, as well as through several congresses taking place later on. As no consensus was reached, this discussion may be considered either as the symptom of a generation gap or as a confrontation between the latinizing and reconstructionist paradigms within Romance Philology. In this paper we will begin by summarizing the essential principles of DÉRom. Secondly, we will carry out an analysis of the papers through which the controversy developed and we will point out the main contributions of this dictionary to the different areas of Romance-speaking Europe. Finally, we will examine the relationships between Proto-Romance, Latin and Vulgar Latin, to arrive at some conclusions.
