; Given the considerable increase in the number of immigrants and refugees around the world since the 2000s, a different set of demands has arisen for those new to the host country, e.g. integration with the new location, search for housing and work, and the indispensability of learning the language(s) of the country of destination. Portuguese as a Welcoming Language (PLAc, in the original Portuguese name) was born in this postmodern, geostrategic scenario and has the migratory context as its primary feature (Caldeira, 2012; Costa & Sá, 2018; Grosso, 2010). This master’s degree thesis aimed to observe and characterize the linguistic and cultural experiences of Syrian refugees in the city of São Paulo, in Brazil. To this end, a corpus of 12 authentic oral narratives of Syrian students who attended PLAc courses was built. The corpus is divided into two groups based on the students’ length of stay in Brazil, at the time of research. The first group is composed of students who had been in the country for no longer than 6 months, while the second group consists of students who had been in Brazil from 6 to 18 months. To characterize these students’ profile, we adapted Mateus’ (2003-2008) Sociolinguistic Record (2003-2008), relying on the descriptions and analysis of the learners’ Narrative Competence (Batoréo, 1998, 2000; Sim-Sim, 1998) and Linguistic Competence (QECR, 2001). This transversal research shows that the students who had spent less time in Brazil produced more elementary narratives, focusing on topics such as the difficulties in learning Portuguese, due to the traumas of the war in their country of origin. On the other hand, the students who had been in Brazil for longer, and had greater opportunities to communicate in Portuguese, presented more adequate narratives. As a result, the latter group included more details about their linguistic and cultural experiences in Brazil, by employing a more elaborate lexicon and by using more appropriate tenses for narrative production and in conveying their cultural knowledge about the host country.
