Allophonic variation in English coronal stops: An EPG corpus study
In: Toronto Working Papers in Linguistics; Vol 40 (2018): Special issue from the CRC-sponsored phonology/phonetics workshops ; 1718-3510 ; 1705-8619 (2018)
Abstract: This paper examines positional and contextual variation in the realization of English coronal stops /t,d/ using a corpus of electropalatographic (EPG) data previously recorded from three native speakers of Canadian English. The analysis was based on 55 utterances with the stops in word-initial, word-final prevocalic, and word-final preconsonantal positions, occurring in a variety of phonetic contexts. Quantitative measurements of the amount of linguopalatal contact, place of articulation, and closure duration revealed considerable differences between initial and final consonants, with the latter being consistently lenited or variably assimilated. In addition, final prevocalic stops were retracted when occurring after /ɹ/; no such retraction was observed for initial stops before /ɹ/. Overall, the results provide quantitative confirmation for many previous impressionistic observations and some instrumental findings on English coronal allophones.
