Abstract:
Previous studies have found that the engagement of domain-general cognitive control can modulate sentence processing. For instance, Hsu and Novick (2016) and Novick et al. (2014) found that cognitive control involved in conflict resolution (i.e., the Stroop and n-back tasks) could facilitate the disambiguation of garden-path sentences, as reflected by the increased accuracy or the earlier eye-movement recovery of the correct interpretation. Ye and Zhou (2008) also found that anterior negativity (300 – 600 ms) and sustained positivity (350 – 750 ms, 350 – 850 ms) brainwave components could be modulated by high vs. low cognitive abilities when participants read sentences that match or mismatch between world knowledge and syntactic structures.
