Culturally-Based Learning Needs of Indigenous Students in Indonesian Papua ...
Fiharsono, Albertus. - : University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, 2022
Abstract: The Indonesian Province of Papua is a diverse region that is both multicultural and multilingual, with more than 275 distinct indigenous ethnic groups speaking more than 275 local languages. The diversity of Papua has been described in terms of socio-cultural levels: urban, rural, and remote (Modouw, 2013). Communities living in urban areas have for some time been adapting to modern life circumstances. Those living in rural settings are still developing kampong/village community structures through agriculture, farming and fishing, and those living in remote areas are still living very simple lives as hunters-gatherers within their communities. From the perspective of school education for indigenous students, each of these socio-cultural levels suggests different accommodations of national curriculum implementation and pedagogy to match the communities’ current levels of development towards modernisation, while recognising their distinctive social and cultural traditions and practices. ... : The research questions explored the culturally-based learning needs of students with an indigenous heritage in Papua. The study examined relationships between national objectives and practices for formal schooling and how these interacted with the range of diversity found among indigenous Papuan students and their communities. Conceptualisations were framed about how education in this part of Indonesia could be more inclusive and engaging for indigenous students and their communities. ...
