Abstract:
The Life of Dorugu“ 1885 veröffentlichte. ... : In 1855, researcher Heinrich Barth returned to Germany and England following a journey of several years through West Africa. He brought along two young Africans whom his colleague Adolf Overbeck had bought out of slavery in 1852 in Kukawa: Dorugu, a Hausa, and Abbega, a Margi. In 1856, they established contact with missionary and linguist Jakob Friedrich Schön, who hired them as assistants for his research work. Dorugu dictated to him his life history, which Schön published in 1885 under the title: “The Life of Dorugu.” Abbega and Dorugu returned to what is now Nigeria in 1857 and 1864 respectively, where they first worked for the Church Missionary Society and later for the British colonial administration. ...
