Politeness and socio-cultural constraints on intercultural competence
Holmes, J.. - 2011
Abstract: Politeness considerations direct attention to the omnipresent relevance of affective and relational meaning in workplace interaction. Our theoretical model (Holmes, Marra and Vine 2011) identifies the different layers of social, cultural and interactional constraints that are relevant in analysing such meaning. Verbal politeness must always be considered in sociocultural context and even in the specific discourse context in which the relevant discourse is located. Examining the sociolinguistic, socio-pragmatic and discursive behaviours of members of different cultural groups in New Zealand, this talk will provide evidence concerning how they negotiate affective meaning within the constraints of their interactional or communicative norms. The analysis provides explicit evidence of the relevance of distinctive cultural values in making politeness judgements in different workplace contexts.
