F0 and syllable lengthening as correlates to stress in Spanish segmentation ...
Iturralde Zurita, Alvaro. - : Open Science Framework, 2022
Abstract: Speech segmentation is one of the key processes that allows us, as listeners, to decode and understand the running speech signal. Different types of information have been found to work as potential cues to help us find boundaries in syllables, words and phrases. In the present work, we concentrate on two prosodic cues: F0 and syllable lengthening. Although these cues have been shown to be useful for native listeners of English, French or Dutch, we do not know much about the function they play in the utterance when used by listeners. Indeed, F0 and syllable lengthening can play different roles according to the place where they are found in the utterance. At the phrase level for example, these cues can mark the end of a prosodic group. On the other hand, when analyzed at the word level, both cues can be correlates of lexical stress in different languages. The aim of the current experiment is to independently test the use of F0 and syllable lengthening for speech segmentation when found as stress correlates in ...
