Sprache und Gesellschaft im Wandel

Abstract:
Die gegenständliche Diplomarbeit setzt sich anhand des Marchfelds (Niederösterreich) als Untersuchungsgebiet mit dem Zusammenhang von gesellschaftlichem und sprachlichem Wandel auseinander. Ihre konkreten Forschungsinteressen werden aus der Dissertation von Anton Pfalz aus dem Jahr 1910 abgeleitet, die trotz ihres strukturalistisch-dialektologischen Interesses an der Dokumentation einer als homogen konzeptualisierten "`bodenständigen Bauernmundart"' auf Aspekte sozial bedingter horizontaler wie auch vertikaler Variation hinweist. Äußere und innere Mehrsprachigkeit spielen dabei eine große Rolle. In der Beschreibung der Sprach(en)geschichte des Marchfelds werden zwei Kontaktszenarien herausgearbeitet, die die Mehrsprachigkeit des Untersuchungsraumes im ausgehenden 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert prägten, nämlich die kroatischsprachige Besiedlung des südöstlichen Marchfelds seit dem späten 15. Jahrhundert als historisches Szenario auf der einen und die Arbeitsmigration in die Landwirtschaft seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert, die v.\,a. Personen mit Tschechisch oder Slowakisch als Erstsprache betraf, auf der anderen Seite. Der empirische Teil der Arbeit gewinnt seine Daten aus den zwischen 1926 und 1930 in Österreich gesammelten Erhebungsbögen für den Deutschen Sprachatlas, den Wenkerbögen. Es zeigt sich, dass die 40 Bögen aus dem Untersuchungsgebiet diskursiv-explizit nur das rezente Kontaktszenario abbilden, in den Übersetzungen der 40 Wenkersätze jedoch nur Kontaktphänomene zu finden sind, die sich auf das historische zurückführen lassen. Insbesondere ein Wenkerbogen aus einem ehemals kroatischsprachig besiedelten Ort zeigt die Tendenz, dass einsilbige Wörter mit der Silbenstruktur CVrC(C) # (z. B. Wurscht) im auf dem Bogen abgebildeten Ortsdialekt zweisilbigen mit der Struktur CV.raC(C) # (z. B. Wurascht) entsprechen. Dieses epenthetische /a/ kann durch die Phonologie der čakavischen Kontaktvarietät erklärt werden. Im Rahmen der variationslinguistischen Analyse der Variable mhd. ei aus allen Wenkerbögen des Untersuchungsgebiets kommen multiple lineare und logistische Regressionsmodelle explorativ zum Einsatzn, um den Einfluss (der Interaktion) quellenspezifischer (Alter und Autochthonie der Ausfüllenden) und soziodemographischer Faktoren (Bevölkerungsgröße, Anteil nicht-deutschsprachiger Personen in vier Zeitschnitten) zu determinieren. Es zeigen sich folgende Tendenzen: (1) Wenkerbögen, die von älteren nicht-autochthonen Lehrpersonen ausgefüllt wurden, realisieren bevorzugt die konservative Variante von mhd. ei (/oa/), wodurch belegt werden konnte, dass die Ausfüllenden Einfluss auf die abgebildete Varietät hatten. (2) Wenkerbögen aus Orten, in denen (noch) 1851 Kroatisch gesprochen wurde, sind progressiver und variieren weniger als jene aus (nur) deutschsprachigen Orten, woraus geschlossen wird, dass der fokussierte Sprachwandel in den kroatischen Orten früher einsetzte. (3) Dies wird vor dem Hintergrund noch deutlicher, dass sich indirekt auch Effekte der geographischen Lage zeigen: Je weiter östlich im Marchfeld gelegen, desto konservativer (mit mehr bogeninterner Variation), je weiter westlich und damit näher bei Wien, desto progressiver (und homogener) sind die Bögen. In den immer mehrheitlich deutschsprachigen Orten lässt sich also die Tendenz der Ausbreitung des Wandels vom Innovationszentrum Wien aus vermuten. (4) Weitere Indizien sprechen dafür, dass eine bestimmte soziale Struktur, die von großem, landwirtschaftlich intensivem Grundbesitz durch eine wenig mobile deutschsprachige Bevölkerung geprägt war, hemmend auf den Wandel von oa/ zu /a:/ wirkte. ; In examining the Marchfeld (Lower Austria) this diploma thesis deals with the connection of social and linguistic change. Its concrete research interests derive from comments made by Anton Pfalz in his dissertation thesis from 1910. Even though it is exclusively interested in giving a structuralist-dialectological description of a local dialect, it comments on aspects of socially determined linguistic variation. In particular, it highlights the role of inner and outer multilingualism. The linguistic history of the research area reveals two main language contact scenarios in the late 19th and early 20th century. The first can be traced to Croatian settlements in the south-eastern part of the Marchfeld from the late 15th century onwards. The second was caused by migration of speakers of Czech and Slovak, who worked in agriculture since the late 19th century. The empirical part of the thesis analyses linguistic data from the questionnaires for the German Linguistic atlas (Wenker's questionnaires), that were collected in Austria between 1926 and 1930. The 40 questionnaires from the research area explicitly refer to the recent contact scenario, while the translations of the 40 sentences only reflect the historical one. A questionnaire from a (previously) Croatian-speaking village tends to turn monosyllabic words with the structure CVrC(C) # (e.g. Wurscht 'sausage') into bisyllabic ones with the structure CV.raC(C) # (e.g. Wurascht}). The epenthetic /a/ can be explained by phonological rules of the Čakavian contact variety. The variationist analysis focuses on the variable MHG ei and its realisation in all questionnares from the Marchfeld. It explorativly uses multiple linear and logistic regressions to identify the influence of (the interaction of) source specific factors (age and autochthony of the translator) and sociodemographic factors (population size, percentage of non-German speaking population at four time points) on linguistic variation. It finds the following tendencies: (1) Questionnaires that were filled in by older, non-autochthonous teachers make more use of the conservative variant oa/ than those filled in by younger, autochthonous translators. This indicates that the translators had an impact on the depicted variety. (2) Questionnaires from villages with Croatian speaking population in 1851 are more progressive and vary to a lesser degree than such from other villages. This suggests that the change set in earlier in the Croatian villages than in other parts of the Marchfeld. (3) This tendency becomes even clearer, because the geographic location indirectly shows an effect on variation: the further east a village, the more conservative (with much variation) the translations tend to be; the further west and thus closer to Vienna, the more progressive and homogenous they are. In predominantly German speaking villages, the change /oa/ > /a:/ therefore appears to have spread from Vienna. (4) Further evidence suggests that a certain social structure hindered the spread of the progressive variant. It was shaped by large estates with intense agriculture owned by a German speaking, relatively immobile population.
