For comparative purposes, we also examined the processes and strategies of native English speaking students. Our initial work was largely exploratory and descriptive. We began our investigations with talk-aloud protocol studies of the strategies students use to answer questions from Oceanography and Psychology textbooks commonly used in introductory level courses.
