This article focuses on two issues: 1. methodological suggestions ensuing from the translation of the founding text of grounded theory methodology (GTM) in the light of the recent literature regarding the translation studies and 2. philosophical reflections and methodological implications about the use of a different language in doing GTM. Both these issues can be useful for GTM practitioners, in particular for native English speakers, since they can uncover some implications of the use of the language in doing research that are commonly taken for granted and underestimated. The translation process has to do with the understanding and use of a social research method. In this sense, to translate, under certain regards, is doing research, a rigorous inquiry aimed at understanding a text. The similarities of these two parallel processes are closely reviewed. Moreover doing research in another language is a powerful analytic resource. Coding in another language requires continuous acts of interlinguistic translation so that it grows our own faculty to understanding. Differences are highlighted, by providing examples from research, among coding in English (an isolating language suitable for advanced coding and memoing) and in Italian (an inflectional language, more suitable for early coding and memoing)." (author's abstract) ; "Sprache ist ein mächtiges, nicht-neutrales Forschungswerkzeug. Dieser Aufsatz hat sich zwei Ziele gesetzt: 1. methodologische Vorschläge zu erarbeiten, die sich aus der Übersetzungsarbeit an einem grundlegenden Text der Grounded-Theory-Methodologie (GTM) ergeben haben und die im Licht neuerer Literatur zum Problem des Übersetzens betrachtet werden; 2. philosophische Reflexionen zur Verwendung einer Fremdsprache beim Arbeiten mit der GTM anzustellen und diesbezügliche methodologische Implikationen zu erwägen. Beide Ziele können für GTM-Forschende (speziell für englischsprachige Muttersprachler/innen) von Nutzen sein, da auf diese Weise einige Auswirkungen der Verwendung von Sprache in der Forschungsarbeit sichtbar werden, die üblicherweise als Selbstverständlichkeit angesehen und unterschätzt werden. Die Tätigkeit des Übersetzens hat mit dem Verständnis und der Anwendung einer Sozialforschungsmethodik zu tun. In diesem Sinne ist Übersetzen selbst eine Art des Forschens, nämlich insofern, als es sich in beiden Fällen um ein fundamentales Bemühen um das Verständnis eines Textes handelt. Die Ähnlichkeiten dieser beiden Prozesse werden näher betrachtet. Zudem erscheint Sozialforschung in einer Fremdsprache als ein machtvolles analytisches Hilfsmittel. Das Kodieren in einer Fremdsprache verlangt fortwährende intertextuelle Übersetzungsarbeit, und so wird unser eigenes Verständnisvermögen vertieft. Anhand von Forschungsbeispielen werden Unterschiede beleuchtet zwischen einer Kodierung in Englisch (einer isolierenden Sprache, die für fortgeschrittenes Kodieren und Memoschreiben passt) und in Italienisch (einer flektierenden Sprache, die besser für frühe Formen des Kodierens und Memoschreibens geeignet ist)."
