Multilingüísme i obertura multilingüe. Gènesi, enfocaments i estratègies d'un programa de desconstrucció

Abstract:
; [eng] The central problem over which this thesis is structured is the desire to suggest a non-dichotomous response to the unilingualism/bilingualism conflict, as it has been lived and read in Catalan society, emphasizing the opening to multilingualism — an unguided expansion, with an open repertoire — as a positive and non-simplifying response to the exponential multiplication of the number of languages currently present in Catalan society. The overall aim of the thesis is to propose an opening to multilingualism in the context of a critique of the treatment that the students’ languages have received in school, but also to the simplistic visions of the Catalan-Spanish linguistic conflict, and to a homogeneous vision of what “normal” should be, from the point of view of language, society, economics and individual (dis)abilities. Throughout the research, the theoretical definitions and critical reflections are materialized in specific proposals for the application of the opening to multilingualism program, which is the result of the professional career of the author; these proposals show that the fundamental aim of this research is not the multilingualism as a fact, or as a goal, but instead the paths that society, school and language teachers must generate so that each individual can build his multilingualism. It is this openness, and not multilingualism as a subject, the center upon which the texts, reflections, and didactic proposals of the thesis orbit. As for the methodology, the thesis establishes itself in the framework of qualitative research — that is, the understanding of “reality” as an object of study in a holistic way, observing the context in its natural form and paying attention to the different perspectives that it presents —, with a social-critical approach, in which the reality is not only constituted by facts or data but, instead, that it is necessary to approach reality with a greater depth to understand it, something that demands a social and political commitment of the researcher, in order to change and modify the reality he studies.
