Interpretação comunitária e migração no Brasil ; Community Interpreting and Migration in Brazil
Origuela, Daniella Avelaneda.
; In the intersection of Migration and Interpreting Studies, this research had the objective of bringing to light an emerging field of interpreting: Community Interpreting, also known as Public Service Interpreting or Intercultural Mediation, among other names. The doctoral thesis used some theories in the area, unprecedented in Brazil, about ethical issues and work coordination, interpreter´s role, furthermore, issues on Community Interpreting training. Community Interpreting is a type of cultural-linguistic mediation that usually occurs in legal contexts (police stations, courts, lawyer´s office, migration offices, etc.) and in medical contexts (hospitals, doctor´s office, emergency rooms, etc.), also in educational contexts. The field of Signed Language Interpreting many times is also considered as being part of Community Interpreting. The importance of studying this area is justified by the new migration waves coming to Brazil, and the need for the State to provide adequate linguistic services to those who do not speak Portuguese, the recent migrants or even native people who do not speak Portuguese, so that they can use public services and communicate with service providers. The research showed that most of the linguistic services are actually provided by NGOs and religious institutions, however, most of the times, these services are provided by people who have not received appropriate training or no training at all; they are known as non-professional interpreters or ad hoc. From practical training experiences in the field of Community Interpreting, we propose what to approach and how to train students for professional performance in the area. We also strongly suggest that there should be adequate public policies to migrants which aim the inclusion in a linguistic perspective of access to services and rights.
