Abstract:
Ernesto Vázquez y Anastacio Nicolás platican de dos árboles: okokowit y okotsokowit. Primero hablan del okokowit del cual hay dos tipos: (1) el ista:k okot de hojas largas y (2) el kostik okot de de hojas cortas. Ningún okot es abundante en Cuetzalan; se da pero sólo si se siembra y los pocos árboles que hay no crecen tan altos como los que se dan por la parte inmediatamente al sur del municipio de Cuetzalan, rumbo a Zacapoaxtla. El okokowit tiene varios usos. Las hojas, que se conocen como okoxa:l, se usan para adornar la iglesia en las fiestas patronales. Una forma de usar las hojas es tejerlas con hilos en forma de espiral. Así se cuelgan en el interior de la iglesia. Otro uso es para tapizar el piso de la iglesia frente al altar mayor. Ahí se tiende una capa con hojas encima para que no se cansen los feligreses al hincarse. Los frutos dan un tercer uso. Estos frutos o piñas de okokowit se conocen como okosin (lit., 'mazorca de ocote') y se usan en varias artesanías. Por ejemplo, algunas personas los recogen para elaborar juguetes en forma de guajolote para vender a los turistas. Un cuarto uso es de la madera, que anteriormente se ocupaba para tirantes, cargadores, alfardas, alfajilla y tablas en la construcción de casas. La madera también se aprovechaba para leña. Un quito uso es fabricar okot (astillas de madera) que se usa para hacer fuego. El okot no es simplemente astillas de pino sino lleva su preparación. Primero prenden leña seca al pie de un okokowit verde. Según Vázquez cuando empieza a calentarse la madera verde del okokowit vivo. Al árbol, entonces, empieza a traspasar y escurrirle la savia que el árbol tiene. Este ayuda a cocer la madera del okokowit. Se cuece todo el tronco hasta las raíces que también aprovechan. Al terminar de cocerse la madera del tronco del árbol, le van sacando al tronco pequeñas astillas y así lo van cortando hasta tumbar el árbol. La gente de la región de Zacapoaxtla viene a vender okot en la plaza de Cuetzalan los días domingo y algunas personas compran okot para ayudar a prender fuego a la leña en la cocina. Hace muchos años cuando no existían las lámparas, la gente de las comunidades también utilizaban el okot para alumbrarse en la casa y en el camino cuando tenían que salir de noche. Un sexto uso es producir okotsot, una sustancia parecida a la miel de abeja. Para extraer lo, cortan en pequeñas astillas el okot cocido y las meten en un cántaro de barro. En seguida ponen el cántaro boca abajo y la boca queda metida adentro de un lebrillo (kaxahpa:s). Alrededor del lebrillo acomodan leña seca y la prenden para que se caliente el cántaro. Cuando se calienta el cántaro el okot que está adentro empieza a calentarse y a escurrir adentro del lebrillo como si fuera miel. Así se va juntando. Hace tiempo el okotsot se usaba para evitar que las semillas de maíz sembradas fueran dañadas por los tejones y otros animales. Antes de sembrar, las semillas se revolvían con okotsot y arena. El okotsot es muy amargo y pegajoso y al enfriarse se pone muy duro. Para evitar que las semillas se pegaran luego luego se mezclaban con un poco de arena para que las semillas pudieran despegarse. Cuando los tejones intentaban escarbar las semillas para comer ya no les gustaba porque sabían amargo con pequeñas bolas de arena. Luego dejaban de escarbar. Finalmente, hablan del okotsokowit, un árbol que escasea en el municipio de Cuetzalan. Tiene hojas parecidas a las hojas de pa:pa:lo:kowit (Platanus mexicana Moric.) aunque más delgadas (kahkana:wak). Llega a crecer en un árbol grande. También se usa para madera de la casa y para leña. Sus hojas se usan para curar la escarlatina (netati:l) en los niños. Se junta con otras hierbas en un conjunto (tanechiko:l) como el maltantsi:n (prob. Satureja brownei (Sw.) Briq.), xo:me:t (Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis (L.) Bolli), o:mekilit (Piper auritum Kunth) y chakayxiwit (Bursera simaruba (L.) Sarg.). Se hierven todas juntas, se deja que el agua se entibie un poco y se baña al paciente.
