Generic Reference : a Comparison between English and Catalan Languages
Abstract: This paper examines the patterns of how to use English and Catalan articles in generic reference in subject, object and prepositional complement position with regard to mass and (singular/plural) count nouns. A study involving thirty four English learner subjects from a language school was carried out. They completed a multiple choice questionnaire that was designed according to each level (beginner, intermediate and advanced). The data show that the three groups are influenced by their L1 transfer effects. Nevertheless, these findings suggest that the advanced learners' accuracy in expressing generic reference is almost native-like. ; Aquest treball investiga les característiques de com s'utilitzen els articles en l'anglès i el català en referència genèrica en posició de subjecte, objecte i complement preposicional pel que fa amb noms invariables i comptables (singulars/plurals). En l'estudi participen trenta-quatre aprenents de l'anglès d'una escola de llengües que van completar un qüestionari dissenyat d'acord amb cada nivell (principiant, intermedi i avançat). Els resultats mostren que els tres grups estan influenciats per la seva L1. No obstant, les dades suggereixen que els subjectes del nivell avançat són els que s'acosten més als nadius a l'hora d'expressar la referència genèrica.
