Sign language interpreting : linguistic coping strategies
Napier, Jemina. - : England : Douglas McLean, 2002
Abstract: This book explores the linguistic coping strategies of interpreters, by drawing on a study of Australian Sign Language (Auslan)/English interpreters. The empirical study concentrated on the use of translation style and the use of omissions as linguistic coping strategies in the interpretation of a university lecture from English into Auslan, with consideration given to sociolinguistic and sociocultural factors that influenced the use of these strategies. This presents a new taxonomy for the analysis of omission types, which can be applied to interpreting in different contexts and also to the training of interpreters. ; Ch. 1. Sociolinguistic and sociocultural contexts of interpreting -- Ch. 2. Coping strategies of interpreters -- Ch. 3. Discourse-specific research: an overview -- Ch. 4. Linguistic coping strategies: an analysis -- Ch. 5. Interpreters' use of linguistic coping strategies -- Ch. 6. Issues to consider.
