Abstract: This study addresses two research questions: 1. Examining the effect of prime modality on second language (L2) learning via syntactic priming; 2. Examining the effect of individual differences in attention and motivation on L2 learning via syntactic priming as a function of prime modality. To do this, we will examine the effect of prime modality, attention and motivation on L2 speakers’ immediate and long-term priming of passive sentences. Furthermore, we will compare these results to first language (L1) speakers’ priming effects under the same conditions. Data collection has been completed but we have not conducted the analysis at the time of preregistration. We used a two-part web-based experiment with English L1 speakers and L2 English speakers who were French native speakers. The first part of the study comprised a pre-test, an immediate priming phase and an immediate post-test.
