Abstract:
What is activism in the classroom? We respond to this question by showing how studying global forms of activism and artivism (activism through art) engages students across the humanities and social sciences in exploring questions about language, cultural specificity, agency and equality. We explore how each of these topics is modified and transformed by digital contact zones between languages and cultures created through websites, social media and other online platforms. We provide examples of approaches and activities developed in our new interdisciplinary module Art and Activism in the Digital Age to enable students to gain an understanding of the role language plays in contemporary activism. Students explore this idea in practice by creating podcasts to develop their own critical and creative voice. We advocate for a collaborative, multilingual and multi-modal classroom in which students work with a range of case studies from around the world.
