Abstract:
International audience ; Saussurean theory of language should not be separated from his lessons about geographical linguistics which are in the fourth part of the Course in General Linguistics. These lessons should be considered with reference to Saussure’s surveys about vernacular romand and chablaisian speech. Slang words were found in handwritten notes. Therefore, we will attempt to gauge the interest of Saussure's linguistic theory on the study of slang. We can observe the original approach of Saussure's way of thinking when comparing him with other authors, for example Charles Nodier, Francisque Michel, Marcel Schwob and George Guieysse who studied slang in the 19th century. For Saussure, slang is a real part of language that the theory can account because it follows the general rules of any semiotic process. However he has not developed a theory open to the sociological and pragmatic dimension of speech, subjectivity, affect and intensity in the language which he however was not insensible. ; La dernière partie du Cours de linguistique générale consacrée à la linguistique géographique témoigne de l’intérêt du linguiste pour la variation. De nombreuses notes manuscrites, conservées à la bibliothèque publique et universitaire de Genève sont consacrées à l’étude ethnographique de parlers locaux, romands ou chablaisiens, avec relevé de variantes sociales et dialectales. Parmi celles-ci, on retrouve nombre d’argotismes. Nous nous proposons ici de voir à cet égard comment la théorie saussurienne de la langue modifie la manière dont l’argot était appréhendé à cette époque et se différencie de l’approche d’autres auteurs, notamment Charles Nodier, Francisque Michel, Marcel Schwob et George Guieysse. La théorie saussurienne envisage en effet le signe comme constellation associative formant système d’interrelations. Ce point de vue permet de rendre compte des types de formation qui excèdent les règles codifiées de l’analogie grammaticale et de considérer les créations de type argotique comme faisant partie de ce système, celles-ci suivant les règles générales de tout processus sémiotique. Cependant, le linguiste n'a pas intégré à sa théorie de la langue la dimension proprement sociologique et pragmatique de la parole et de la subjectivité, à laquelle il n’est cependant pas insensible comme le montrent ces écrits.
