Abstract:
International audience ; Nowadays, there are no sources that mention difficulties in linguistic communication between Italian Romans and new gothic inhabitants who had been set up in different provinces. If all Goths didn't manage Latin when they first arrived, this was no longer the case for the next generation. Everything seems to point out the fact that the Goths were the ones that adapted themselves (and not the Romans that were numerically superior) by learning Latin without forgetting their own language for all that. The ruling family of the Amales showed the example of plurilingualism by keeping in its cultural legacy the Greek language that used to be spoken by the older ones in their previous life within the oriental part of the Empire. Romans who learned gothic within the ruling classes are considered exceptions and did learn this language out of a will of showing their attachment and great fidelity to the gothic courts and kings. The language is indeed perceived as one of the criteria to recognize a barbarian as much as the clothing and religion. Nevertheless, as shown by the sources of the Ostrogothic and Vandal kingdoms studied here, none of these criteria are sufficient nor absolute to identify a barbarian.
