18	Code-switching as "authenticization" of cultural markers and voices in Carribean historical novels on the Trujillo regime

	Abstract: Das Phänomen des Sprachwechsels zwischen zwei oder mehreren Sprachen – genannt Code-Switching – wurde im Hinblick auf den gesprochenen Dialog vielfach untersucht und diskutiert. Aber auch in der Literatur ist der Sprachwechsel eine wiederkehrende Technik, da sie zur Erzielung spezifischer Effekte eingesetzt wird. Diese Arbeit geht insbesondere auf einen dieser Effekte ein, nämlich wie der Einsatz von Code-Switching in der Literatur eine gewisse Authenticization von übermittelten Werten und konstruierten Stimmen durch die Interaktion des impliziten Lesers mit der Erzählung schafft. Dieser Effekt zeigt sich in der Analyse zweier karibischer Romane, die ihre Hauptsprache Englisch mit einer dichten Einbettung des Spanischen kombinieren, wie in Junot Diaz’ The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, oder einem gelegentlichen Wechsel zur französischen oder haitianischen Kreolsprache, wie es in Edwidge Danticats The Farming of Bones, geschieht. Daher sind Erörterungen der Konzepte der Zwei- und Mehrsprachigkeit, der Übersetzbarkeit sowie der Authentizität und des impliziten Lesers zentrale Bestandteile dieser Arbeit. Um eine fruchtbare Analyse zu ermöglichen, stelle ich außerdem den Begriff der Authenticization vor, welcher die genannte Synergie zwischen Leserschaft und Text beschreibt, sowie den daraus resultierenden Prozess der Schaffung von Authentizitätseffekten. Schließlich veranschaulicht eine detaillierte Analyse die zuvor formulierten Hypothesen und Behauptungen, die für die Erschaffung eines Authentizitätseffekts der Darstellung und Übermittlung von Kulturen wesentlich sind. ; The phenomenon of altering between two or more languages, known as code-switching, has been investigated in detail regarding spoken interaction. However, narrative code-switching is also a recurring technique in literature as it is employed to achieve specific effects. This thesis elaborates on one of those effects in particular, namely how the employment of code-switching in literature creates authenticization of embedded values and constructed voices through the implied reader’s interaction with the narrative. This effect is demonstrated in the analysis of two Caribbean novels that combine their main code English with a dense embedding of Spanish, as in Junot Díaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, or an occasional switching to French or Haitian Creole, as it is done in Edwidge Danticat’s The Farming of Bones. Therefore, a discussion of the concepts of bi- and multilingualism, translinguality, as well as authenticity and the implied reader are pivotal parts of this thesis. Moreover, in order to guarantee a fruitful analysis, I introduce the notion of authenticization, describing the synergy between reader and text and the consequent process of creating authenticity effects. At last, a detailed analysis realises the formulated hypotheses based on selected examples from the texts and shows the interconnectedness of language use, connotations, and cultural significance that are essential to create an authenticity effect when portraying cultures.
