Das Sprachknaben-Institut der Habsburgermonarchie in Konstantinopel unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des historischen Kontexts des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts

Abstract:
Der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit liegt auf der Gründung und Entwicklung der ersten ori-entalischen Sprachschulen für Dolmetscher in Konstantinopel. Der erste Teil ist dem historischen Kontext vor der Gründung der Sprachschulen gewidmet. Die Darstellung der historischen, wirtschaftlichen und kulturellen Gegeben-heiten des Zeitraums ist wichtig, um die Notwendigkeit der Entstehung eigener Sprach-schulen zu verstehen. Durch das Ende des oströmischen Reiches und die Herandrän-gung des osmanischen Reiches bis nach Wien geriet das damalige Weltgefüge in große Turbulenzen. Es wird im zweiten Kapitel auf Konstantinopel als Schauplatz europäischer Machtkämpfe und die Entwicklung einer modernen Diplomatie im Zuge der Zentralisie-rung von Machtstrukturen in Europa eingegangen. In diesem Kontext wird dann die Frage untersucht, warum die europäischen Mächte sich dafür entschieden, ihre eigenen Dolmetscher für ihre Beziehungen mit dem Osmanischen Reich auszubilden. Im dritten Teil werden die Sprachknaben-Institute Venedigs, Polens, Frankreichs und der Habsburgermonarchie vorgestellt, an denen europäische Dragomane ausgebildet wurden. Genauer wird auf das Modell der Habsburgermonarchie eingegangen. Die vorliegende Arbeit belegt trotz der Widersprüche in der Literatur das genaue Gründungsjahr des Sprachknaben-Instituts der Habsburgermonarchie. Die chronologi-sche Entwicklung des Sprachknaben-Instituts der Habsburgermonarchie wird dargestellt und zugleich ein wichtiger Aspekt der Dolmetschausbildung untersucht, da es zu dieser Zeit zum ersten Mal Versuche gab, Dolmetscher systematisch auszubilden. Die Aufga-ben der Dragomane beschränkten sich nicht auf das Übersetzen oder Dolmetschen, son-dern verlangten unter anderem diplomatisches Geschick und kulturelle Kenntnisse. Es stellte sich damals schon die Frage, ob eine Dolmetschausbildung eine rein sprachliche Ausbildung sein musste oder ob die politischen und kulturellen Kompetenzen neben den sprachlichen Kenntnissen genauso wichtig waren. Die Sprachknaben-Institute existierten einige Jahrzehnte in Konstantinopel als einzige Ausbildungsstätte für angehende Dolmetscher. Sie rückten allmählich ins Zent-rum großer Kritik, so dass beschlossen wurde, die Dragomane in den jeweiligen Ländern auszubilden und die Ausbildungsstätten nach Europa zurückzuverlegen. ; This work focuses on the foundation and development of the first schools for oriental languages in Constantinople – known as Sprachknaben-Institute – where inter-preters were trained. The first part of this work presents the historical context prior to the foundation of the language schools. An overview of the historical, economic and cultural context is very important in order to understand the need for the european powers to establish their own language schools. The end of the Byzantine Empire and the rise of the Ottoman Empire had destabilized the existing world order. The second part focuses on Constantinople as the scene of power struggles be-tween the different European powers, as well as on the development of modern diplo-macy as the centralization of power structures became increasingly important in Europe. In this context, the question of why the European powers decided to train their own interpreters for their relations with the Ottoman Empire will then be analysed. The third part will present the various Sprachknaben-Institute of Venice, Poland, France and the Habsburg Empire, which were training schools for the European drago-mans. The model of the Habsburg Empire will be explored in greater detail. Despite contradictory indications in the references, this work establishes the ex-act date of the foundation of the Sprachknaben-Institut of the Habsburg Empire. Its chronological development will be presented, as will an important aspect of interpreter training: it was at this time that the first attempts were made to train interpreters in a systematic fashion. The duties of the dragomans were not confined to translation or in-terpreting, but also required diplomatic flair and cultural understanding, amongst other skills. Even at that time, the question arose as to whether interpreter training should be purely linguistic, or whether political and cultural skills were equally important. For many decades, the Sprachknaben-Institute in Constantinople were the only schools for future interpreters. Over the years, however, they drew ever more criticism. Ultimately, it was decided that the dragomans should be trained in their respective countries, and the schools were recalled to Europe.
